10 Really Cool Picture Disc Vinyl Records

10 Really Cool Picture Disc Vinyl Records

The vinyl revival over the last decade has seen many records become highly collectable and sought after. There are literally tons and tons of reissues of all the classic albums over the last 60 years or so and even your mainstream supermarket have been stocking up on records literally decades after withdrawing them from their shelves. So its no surprise that picture discs have also become a revived collectors item too these days.

So here below are ten wonderfully pleasing to the eye pieces of vinyl that would look cool in any collection or simply in a frame on the wall. In no particular order.

RAY PARKER JR. GHOSTBUSTERS

The iconic movie from the 80's delivered an even more iconic image with the famous anti ghost artwork. This disc is fetching good money these days on vinyl collector sites.

THE BEASTIE BOYS. NO SLEEP TILL BROOKLYN

Those Beastie Boys were on top of their game in the late 80's and they caused quite a stir in the media with their antics on stage, but off stage and on vinyl they produced the goods and also delivered a very cool 7 inch disc with this single. Taking the artwork from their album, this disc is a very collectable piece now among dealers of rare records. Looks pretty cool too.

THE ROLLING STONES. SHE WAS HOT

Quite simply the most recognizable iconic image in the entire history of Rock & Roll. The Stones famous lips logo designed by John Pasche in the early 1970,s has become a household known logo and continues to be used by the band in many different ways on a variety of merchandise. This picture disc from the bands "She Was Hot" single in 1984  would look cool on any living room wall.

SPINAL TAP. BITCH SCHOOL

Anyone who knows their Spinal Tap will agree that this picture disc is a perfect symbol for the movie. The infamous scene where the group are expecting a full sized model of Stonehenge to arrive on stage during their classic track, only to be greeted by a tiny scaled model is the breaking point for the bands demise. This picture disc is a seven inch record released in 1992, perfectly depicts that notorious moment for the band. A cool item indeed.

SURVIVOR. BURNING HEART

We all know the original Rocky theme of course, but the killer track from the fourth episode of the Rocky franchise is also a well known hit. The same band who delivered Eye of the Tiger released this great looking boxing glove in 1985 is again another collectors item on various sites. Looks like it packs a punch for sure.

DEVO. BEAUTIFUL WORLD

One of the music worlds most vibrant and coolest of alternative bands. Devo always pushed their music to the edge but kept themselves within the mainstream. This awesome retro Astronaut shaped picture disc was released in 1981 during the bands hey day. The disc is a great looking piece for anyone interested in decorating their wall with space art.

LED ZEPPELIN III

They were the true kings of Rock in the 1970's having sold out across the world wherever they performed. This picture disc is a reissue of the bands 3rd album from 1970. But what is great about it is that the artwork itself never gets boring. There is always something new to look at. The original vinyl release was a wheel that moved around in the inner sleeve with holes cut out so the images changed as it was spun around. This is called a Volvelle. However the picture disc is a nice bit of pop art with a touch of the psychedelic.

ABBA. GREATEST HITS

This unofficial disc was released in Portugal in the mid 90's and although it has no funky shape or outlandish look, it does however have the classic Abba look from the band in the mid 1970's wearing the finest outfits that you would expect from a pop group back then. The simple font used on the record is not the bands logo but still stands out just as brightly. I guess the legend of Abba makes this just look like a really cool retro piece to have in your collection.

THOMPSON TWINS. WATCHING

One of those early to mid 80's bands that made some good quality catchy pop tunes. I believe that the main singer moved to America after the group split and became an English teacher in schools. However this cool picture disc from their "Watching" single released in 1983 is a fine piece of 80's pop culture. The instantly recognizable hair cuts from each member make this stand out among the crowd.

FAT LARRYS BAND. STUBBORN KINDA FELLOW

One of those superb pop funk bands in the early 80's. Fat Larry had a massive hit single with a track called Zoom. However this one above did not chart so well, peaking at number 83. But the picture disc is as cool as it gets. There is Larry himself looking like he belongs on the Grand Theft Auto Vice City game as a gangster or a radio DJ. The artwork is almost identical to that of the game. But nevertheless this is a cool item.
